Description

This is an interpretive recreation of the flag flown at the Monster Meeting of Diggers at Forest Creek on 15 December 1851. It was created in 1975 for the first modern commemoration of the Diggers’ Meeting and now flies permanently at the Meeting’s heritage listed site at Chewton in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park on Dja Dja Wurrung country.

The flag has four quadrants – the crossed pick and shovel for the Digger’s labour, the kangaroo and emu for Australia, a tied bundle of sticks, representing the strength of the Diggers’ unity, and the scales of justice. There is no record of who originally designed and made the flag but it is partially shown flying above the speakers in an 1851 sketch of the Meeting by David Tulloch.
